Morocco itinerary for 7 and 10 days

This Morocco itinerary guide is built for a first trip: what to see in 10 days, how to fit the highlights into 7, and what to pick if you have only 4 or 5 days or a full two weeks. They are the same routes we drive as private tours, so you can follow them on your own or ask us for the tour as it is.

One thing first: Morocco is bigger than it looks on the map. The north, the imperial cities, the Atlas and the Sahara are hours apart by road, and a good itinerary is one that doesn’t try to cover everything.

How many days do you need in Morocco?

It depends on how many regions you want to combine. As a rule of thumb:

DaysWhat you can seeClosest tour
4-5One region: the north and the imperial cities, or the Atlas and the desertTangier to Casablanca in 5 days · Marrakech to Fes in 4 days
7The imperial cities, Chefchaouen and a night in the desert, with a few long drives7 days from Fes · 7 days from Tangier
10The same at an easier pace: two nights in the desert and proper time in Fes and Marrakech10 days from Casablanca · 10 days from Tangier
12-14All of that plus the Atlantic coast: Asilah, Tangier or Essaouira12 days · 14 days from Casablanca

For a first visit, 10 days is the most comfortable length to see both north and south without spending the trip in the car. Seven days works if you accept a couple of long days on the road.

Morocco 10-day itinerary, day by day

This is the day-by-day plan of our 10-day tour from Casablanca, the classic loop at a relaxed pace:

  1. Day 1. Arrival in Casablanca and a visit to the Hassan II Mosque.
  2. Day 2. Rabat, then into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen.
  3. Day 3. Volubilis, Meknes and on to Fes.
  4. Day 4. Fes with a local guide: the Fes el-Bali medina, its souks and madrasas.
  5. Day 5. Ifrane, the Middle Atlas cedar forest and the Ziz Valley to Merzouga. Night in the desert.
  6. Day 6. A day by 4x4 around Merzouga: Khamlia, tea with a nomad family and an old mine. Second night in the dunes.
  7. Day 7. Rissani, Erfoud, the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley.
  8. Day 8. The Valley of Roses, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and over the High Atlas to Marrakech.
  9. Day 9. Marrakech with a local guide, then Jemaa el-Fna square in the evening.
  10. Day 10. Transfer to Marrakech airport.

Our other 10-day routes change the starting point or add the coast: from Tangier, with a full day in Chefchaouen; Marrakech to Tangier, with a day in Essaouira; and Fes to Tangier, via Essaouira, Casablanca and Rabat. See them side by side in our 10-day tours.

Morocco 7-day itinerary: the full loop from Fes

One week is enough for a complete loop if you keep moving. This is our 7-day tour from Fes:

  1. Day 1. Fes · Meknes · Volubilis · Chefchaouen. The Bab Mansour gate in Meknes, the Roman ruins of Volubilis and, in the afternoon, the Rif Mountains to the blue city.
  2. Day 2. Chefchaouen · Rabat. A morning in the blue medina, then on to the capital: the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Kasbah of the Udayas.
  3. Day 3. Casablanca · Marrakech. The Hassan II Mosque on the Atlantic, then Marrakech in time for Jemaa el-Fna.
  4. Day 4. Marrakech. The Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia and the souks.
  5. Day 5. The High Atlas and Ait Ben Haddou. The Tizi n’Tichka pass, the Ait Ben Haddou kasbah and a night in Ouarzazate.
  6. Day 6. Valley of Roses, Todra Gorge and Merzouga. At sunset, by camel to the camp in the dunes.
  7. Day 7. From the desert to Fes. Sunrise in the dunes, then back through the Ziz Valley, the Middle Atlas cedars and Ifrane.

Worth knowing: days 3, 6 and 7 are long drives, and there is no full day in Fes on this route. If you arrive the evening before, use it for the medina.

Another week: Tangier to Marrakech

If you fly into Tangier or arrive by ferry from Spain, the natural route runs north to south and ends in Marrakech, which has plenty of flights home. This is our 7-day tour from Tangier:

  1. Day 1. Tangier · Tetouan · Chefchaouen.
  2. Day 2. Volubilis · Meknes · Fes.
  3. Day 3. Fes with a local guide.
  4. Day 4. Ifrane and the Middle Atlas cedars · Merzouga, night in the desert.
  5. Day 5. A day by 4x4 around Merzouga and a second night at the camp.
  6. Day 6. Rissani · Todra Gorge · Dades Valley.
  7. Day 7. Valley of Roses · Ouarzazate · Ait Ben Haddou · Marrakech.

Compared with the loop from Fes, you get a full day in Fes and two desert nights, but you skip Rabat and Casablanca and reach Marrakech on the last day. One day more or less? See our other 7-day tours, the 6-day routes from Marrakech and from Tangier, and the 8-day tour from Casablanca.

Morocco in two weeks

Two weeks let you add the Atlantic coast and stay two nights in a few places. Our 14-day tour from Casablanca heads up the coast through Rabat and Asilah to Tangier, comes down via Tetouan to Chefchaouen (with a full day there), continues through Volubilis, Meknes and Fes, spends two nights in the desert, follows the road of the kasbahs to Marrakech and finishes with a night in Essaouira.

With 12 days, the 12-day tour covers almost the same ground without Asilah, Tangier and Tetouan, and visits Essaouira on a day trip. With an extra day or two, leave a free day in Marrakech or add a trip to the Ourika Valley or the Ouzoud waterfalls.

What to see in Morocco in 5 days (or 4)

With 4 or 5 days, choose north or south. Trying to do both means spending your trip on the road.

  • The north and the imperial cities: Tangier to Casablanca in 5 days, with Tetouan, a full day in Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes, Fes and Rabat. No desert, but shorter drives.
  • The Atlas and the desert: Marrakech to Fes in 3 or 4 days, over the High Atlas and along the road of the kasbahs, with one or two nights in the Merzouga dunes.
  • One city and day trips: stay in Marrakech and head out for a day to Ait Ben Haddou, Essaouira or the Ourika Valley. The most relaxed option.

There is also a 5-day route from Tangier to Marrakech with a night in the desert, but it has several long days in the car.

Independently, by rental car or with a private driver?

On your own by public transport. Trains link the big cities of the north and centre (Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech), and buses reach almost everywhere. A Morocco itinerary without a car works well for the imperial cities; for the Atlas, the kasbahs and the desert, timetables and connections make a 7- or 10-day route much harder. Chefchaouen has no train station.

By rental car. It gives you freedom, but expect mountain roads, long stretches, police checkpoints and medinas you cannot drive into. We cover it in getting around Morocco.

With a private driver. The vehicle and driver are for your group only: 4x4s or vans with air conditioning and a driver who speaks English, Spanish, French or Italian. You set the pace and the stops, and you never have to park or navigate. That is how our private tours work. The price is quoted on request: it depends on group size, accommodation, season and any changes to the route.

Tips for planning your route

  • Fly into one city and out of another. Arriving in Tangier or Fes and leaving from Marrakech (or the other way round) saves a full day of driving back.
  • Don’t leave the desert for your last day if you have an early flight: Merzouga to Marrakech or Fes is a full day on the road.
  • One night in the desert is the minimum; two is comfortable. For things to do in the dunes, see the Merzouga 4x4 excursions; for a more comfortable night, the tents with private bathrooms at Tassili Luxury Desert Camp.
  • Pick your dates carefully. Summer is hot inland and winter can bring snow to the Atlas: see the best time to visit Morocco.
  • Leave some slack. A free afternoon in Fes or Marrakech is worth more than one extra stop.

WhatsApp
How many days do you need in Morocco?

For a first trip that combines the north, the imperial cities and the desert, 10 days is comfortable and 7 is the minimum. With 4 or 5 days, stick to one region; with two weeks, you can add the Atlantic coast.

Can you travel around Morocco without a car?

Yes, especially between the imperial cities, which are well connected by train. Adding the Atlas and the desert in a week by public transport is very tight, and that is where a rental car or a driver makes the difference. More in getting around Morocco.

Where should a Morocco itinerary start?

Wherever your flight works best. Marrakech, Fes and Casablanca have international airports, and Tangier is the gateway if you come by ferry from Spain. We run tours from all four: from Marrakech, from Fes, from Casablanca and from Tangier.

How long does it take to get from Fes to Marrakech?

Driving straight through is a long day on the road, so most travellers turn it into a 2- to 4-day trip through the Sahara and the Atlas: Fes to Marrakech in 2 days, in 3 days or in 4 days. For trains between cities, see getting around Morocco.

How much does a Morocco trip cost?

We don’t publish a fixed price because every trip is private. It depends on how many of you are travelling, the type of accommodation, the season and any changes to the route. Send us your dates on WhatsApp and we will reply with a quote.

Can I change a tour itinerary?

Yes. You can add or drop days, change the start or end city and stay longer in one place. That is what our custom tours are for.
