Best time to visit Morocco

The best time to visit Morocco is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November): warm days in the cities, comfortable weather in the desert and less heat on the road. But each region has its moment. The coast is at its best in summer, while winter brings snow to the Atlas and cold nights in the south.

Below is the weather month by month for the cities, the coast, the Atlas and the desert, based on official data, plus what to expect if you’re looking at Morocco tours in winter, and what to know about Ramadan.

In short: spring and autumn

  • Spring (March-May): the best all-rounder. In Marrakech, average highs in April are around 26 °C (79 °F) with lows of 12 °C (54 °F). The north is green after the winter rains.
  • Summer (June-August): very hot inland and in the south. In July, Marrakech averages highs of 38 °C (100 °F) and Errachidia, on the edge of the desert, 40 °C (104 °F). The Atlantic coast stays at 26-30 °C (79-86 °F).
  • Autumn (September-November): the other great season. October is pleasant across the country; in November the rain returns to the north.
  • Winter (December-February): mild days in Marrakech (around 19-20 °C, 66-68 °F) and cold nights, averaging 2-4 °C (36-39 °F) in the south. Snow on the Atlas peaks and rain in the north.

Average daily highs and lows for each month, in °C. These are the 1991-2020 climate normals published by the World Meteorological Organization, with data from Morocco’s national weather service. Errachidia is the nearest city with official data to the Merzouga desert.

Rain matters too: Tangier averages about 10 rainy days a month from November to January, and Fes 8-9 days a month from November to April. Marrakech is much drier, with 2 to 6 rainy days a month.

Morocco in winter: December and January

Winter is a popular time for Morocco tours, especially over Christmas and New Year, and it works well if you pack for it. Days are sunny and mild in Marrakech (average highs of 19-20 °C), but nights are cold: average lows of 6-7 °C in Marrakech and 2-4 °C in Errachidia and the desert. The Atlas peaks are usually snow-capped.

The north is the wettest part of the country in winter, so if Chefchaouen and Tangier are on your list, bring a rain jacket. The upside: fewer crowds in the medinas and clear desert skies.

Morocco in October and November

October is one of the best months of the year: highs around 29 °C in Marrakech and 26 °C in Fes, and mild nights in the desert. Small wonder it’s one of the busiest months for tours; have a look at our 7-day tours and 10-day tours.

November is still very good for the south and the imperial cities, with highs of 23 °C in Marrakech and 20-21 °C in Fes and the desert. Rain returns to the north (about 10 rainy days in Tangier) and nights get cooler.

The imperial cities

Fes, Meknes, Rabat and Marrakech are best explored in spring and autumn, when walking the medinas isn’t a battle with the heat.

  • Fes and Meknes, inland: hot summers (average July highs of 35 °C in Fes) and cool, wet winters, with January lows around 4 °C.
  • Rabat, on the Atlantic: milder all year round.
  • Marrakech: dry, with sunny winter days, cold nights and very hot summers.

To see them all, browse our imperial cities tours or the 7-day tour from Fes.

The coast

The Atlantic coast has the steadiest climate in the country. In Casablanca, average highs run from 18 °C in January to 27 °C in August; further south in Agadir, from 21 to 27 °C. That makes it the best escape in summer.

The north, by contrast, is the wettest region: in Tangier it rains roughly one day in three from November to January. Essaouira is known for its wind, which keeps summer days fresh.

From Marrakech, the Essaouira day trip is the easiest seaside escape. To travel the coast properly, the 14-day tour from Casablanca takes in Rabat, Asilah, Tangier and Essaouira.

The Atlas Mountains

In winter the High Atlas peaks are covered in snow, and mountain passes can be affected. It’s beautiful, but cold: in Ouarzazate, just south of the Atlas, average January lows are around 2 °C.

In spring the valleys are green and full of water; in autumn the weather is settled. In summer the Atlas is a welcome break from the heat of Marrakech.

Go for a day on our day trip from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley or the Middle Atlas day trip from Fes, or cross the mountains on the 3-day Marrakech to Fes tour.

The desert

The desert is a land of extremes. In July, Errachidia, the nearest city to Merzouga with official data, averages highs of 40 °C; in January, lows of 2 °C. The most pleasant months run from October to April, with warm days and, in midwinter, cold nights, so pack a warm layer.

Summer visits are possible, with activities early in the morning and at sunset. For dune excursions, see Merzouga 4x4; to sleep in a tent with a private bathroom, Tassili Luxury Desert Camp.

Ramadan and holidays

Ramadan is the Muslim month of fasting. It follows the lunar calendar, so it starts about 10 or 11 days earlier each year: check the dates for your year before you book.

Travelling during Ramadan is perfectly possible. During the day many local cafés and restaurants close or shorten their hours and life slows down; at sunset the fast is broken and the streets fill up. Out of respect, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in the street during the day.

Ramadan ends with Eid al-Fitr, and about two months later comes Eid al-Adha. Both move each year. They’re family holidays: roads are busy and some shops close for a few days.

Christmas, New Year and Easter

Christmas and New Year are among the busiest weeks in Morocco. Days are pleasant in Marrakech (average December highs of 20 °C), but nights are cold, especially in the desert (average lows of about 4 °C in Errachidia) and in the Atlas, where there may be snow. Ideas and tours are on our New Year in Morocco page.

Easter falls in spring, one of the best times to travel. The date changes every year and it’s a busy period, so ask for a quote early. See Easter in Morocco.

What is the best month to visit Morocco?

April, May and October are the most balanced: warm in the cities, comfortable in the desert, and without the winter rain in the north. March, September and November are also good.

Is December a good time to visit Morocco?

Yes, if you pack warm layers. Days are sunny and mild in Marrakech (around 20 °C), but nights are cold, especially in the desert and the Atlas. The north can be rainy.

Is Morocco too hot in summer?

Inland, it’s very hot: average highs of 37-38 °C in Marrakech and 38-40 °C near the desert in July and August. The coast is much milder (26-30 °C). An air-conditioned vehicle and early starts make a real difference.

What is the weather like in Morocco in January?

Cool and mostly dry in the south: average highs of 19 °C and lows of 6 °C in Marrakech, with nights around 2 °C near the desert. It’s the rainy season in the north.

Yes. Tours run as normal; only the pace changes, with some restaurants closed during the day and a lively atmosphere after sunset. Dates change every year, so check them before booking.
