Getting around Morocco

Getting around Morocco is easier than many people expect, as long as you match the transport to the route. The north and the Atlantic coast are linked by motorway and rail; south of the Atlas and out to the desert, it’s road only.

This guide covers distances and travel times between the main cities, how to get from Tangier to Marrakech, how the trains and buses work, what to know before driving yourself, and when a private driver makes sense.

Distances and travel times between the main cities

RouteApprox. distanceDriving time, no stops

Tangier – Rabatabout 245 km (150 mi)about 3 h
Tangier – Fesabout 300-400 km (185-250 mi), depending on the routeabout 4 h 30 min
Tangier – Casablancaabout 340 km (210 mi)about 4 h
Tangier – Marrakechabout 570 km (355 mi)about 6 h 30 min
Chefchaouen – Fesabout 200 km (125 mi)about 4 h
Fes – Meknesabout 70 km (45 mi)1 h
Fes – Rabatabout 200 km (125 mi)about 2 h 30 min
Fes – Marrakech (motorway)about 530 km (330 mi)about 6 h
Rabat – Casablancaabout 90 km (55 mi)just over 1 h
Casablanca – Marrakechabout 240 km (150 mi)about 3 h
Marrakech – Essaouiraabout 185 km (115 mi)about 3 h
Marrakech – Ouarzazateabout 195 km (120 mi)about 4 h
Ouarzazate – Merzougaabout 360 km (225 mi)about 6 h 30 min
Fes – Merzougaabout 460 km (285 mi)about 8 h
Marrakech – Merzougaabout 550 km (340 mi)about 10 h

Figures are rounded from a map route planner and count driving time only. Add stops for lunch, photos and visits and a day on the road always runs longer. Mountain roads, like the Atlas pass to Ouarzazate, are slower than the distance suggests.

How to get from Tangier to Marrakech

The distance between Tangier and Marrakech is about 570 km. By motorway, via Rabat and Casablanca, that’s around 6 hours 30 minutes of driving: doable in a day, but it is the whole day.

How long is the train from Tangier to Marrakech? There’s no direct high-speed service yet. Al Boraq takes you from Tangier to Casablanca in about 2 h 10 min; from there a regular train reaches Marrakech in about 3 hours. With the change, allow more than 5 hours.

Or don’t go in a straight line. Between Tangier and Marrakech lie Chefchaouen, Fes and, if you swing east, the Sahara. That’s the idea behind our 5-day Tangier to Marrakech tour, or the slower 7-day and 10-day versions with two nights in the desert.

How far is Casablanca from Marrakech?

About 240 km by motorway, so roughly 3 hours by car. By train from Casa Voyageurs station, the ONCF timetable also shows about 3 hours.

The closest airport to Casablanca is Mohammed V International, with a train link into the city, where you can change for Marrakech. On our tours from Casablanca we pick you up at the airport, and your bags stay in the vehicle for the whole trip.

Short on time? There’s a day trip from Casablanca to Marrakech. Starting a longer trip in Casablanca, the 10-day tour from Casablanca heads north first (Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes), crosses to the desert and finishes in Marrakech.

From Fes to Marrakech

Three very different ways to make this journey:

  • By motorway via Rabat and Casablanca: about 530 km, around 6 hours.
  • By direct train: about 7 hours on the ONCF timetable.
  • Through the south, over the Middle Atlas to the desert and back along the Road of the Kasbahs: the choice for anyone with two or three days, and the one most people ask us for.

Going south, our 3-day Fes to Marrakech tour takes in the dunes, the Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley and Ait Ben Haddou. Travelling the other way? The 3-day Marrakech to Fes tour runs the same route in reverse.

Trains in Morocco: Al Boraq and the ONCF network

Trains are run by ONCF, the national railway. What matters for a trip around Morocco:

  • Al Boraq is the high-speed train linking Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat (Rabat Agdal station) and Casablanca (Casa Voyageurs). According to ONCF, it takes about 50 minutes from Tangier to Kenitra, 1 h 20 min to Rabat and 2 h 10 min to Casablanca.
  • The conventional network links Casablanca with Marrakech, and Rabat with Meknes and Fes. There are direct trains between Marrakech and Fes.
  • Where trains don’t go: Chefchaouen, Essaouira, Ouarzazate and the desert have no railway.

ONCF is building a high-speed line from Kenitra to Marrakech and carrying out works around Casablanca which, it says, will last until the end of 2027 and may change some journey times. Check the timetable for your day on oncf-voyages.ma, where you can also buy tickets.

Buses: CTM and Supratours

Where the train stops, long-distance buses take over, and they’re the cheapest way to get around. The two companies most travellers use:

  • CTM: nationwide coaches, with online booking at ctm.ma. It runs to Chefchaouen from Tangier and from Fes.
  • Supratours: ONCF’s bus company. It connects train stations with towns that have no railway, such as Tetouan, Agadir and Essaouira, and sells combined train-and-bus tickets.

Buses work well from city to city. What they don’t give you is flexibility: fixed times, bus stations at each end, and no stopping on the way.

Driving in Morocco yourself

Plenty of people rent a car and drive. Before you decide, a few things worth knowing:

  • Do you need an international driving permit? It depends on who issued your licence. UK government advice says UK licence holders need the 1968 international driving permit as well as their licence. If your licence is from elsewhere, check your own government’s Morocco page and ask your rental company.
  • Roads. Motorways link the big cities (Tangier-Rabat, Rabat-Fes, Casablanca-Marrakech, Marrakech-Agadir). National roads are generally in good condition but can be narrow and busy, with animals on the road. The Atlas passes are slow going.
  • Avoid driving at night. UK advice warns that poor lighting makes night driving dangerous; Spanish and French official advice also recommend against it.
  • Police checks. Gendarmerie checkpoints on the road are very common.
  • Drink-driving is a serious offence in Morocco, UK advice points out.

Hiring a private driver

With a private driver you don’t think about roads, parking or timetables. The vehicle and driver are for your group only, and you set the pace: stop for a photo, a mint tea or a detour you hadn’t planned.

Morocco Trips is a Moroccan company based near Merzouga, running private tours with a driver across the country since 2004. You travel in air-conditioned 4x4s or vans, with drivers who speak English, Spanish, French and Italian.

Start from one of our Morocco tours or ask us for a custom tour. We also do private transfers between cities: message us on WhatsApp.

Private driver cost is quoted on WhatsApp. It depends on how many of you are travelling, your accommodation, the time of year and any changes to the route.

Getting to Chefchaouen: there’s no train

Chefchaouen has no railway station. You get there by road: car, bus or private driver. Approximate distances:

  • From Tangier: about 115 km, around 2 hours.
  • From Fes: about 200 km, around 4 hours.
  • From Casablanca: about 340 km, around 5 h 30 min.
  • From Marrakech: about 570 km, around 8 hours. Too far for a there-and-back day.

CTM runs buses to Chefchaouen from Tangier and Fes. With a driver, you can do it in a day on the Chefchaouen day trip from Tangier or the day trip from Fes. Thinking of staying the night? Read our Chefchaouen guide.
