What the day looks like
Morning pick-up in Fes; about an hour later you’re in Meknes. You enter through Bab Mansour, one of Morocco’s best-known monumental gates, opposite El Hedim Square, and then see the royal stables built by Moulay Ismail.
In the afternoon, Volubilis: a Roman town in the middle of the countryside, with streets, houses with mosaic floors, the basilica and the Arch of Caracalla. Volubilis sits next to Moulay Idriss, the holy town on the hill opposite. Back to Fes in the late afternoon.
Tips for visiting Volubilis
- Sun: there’s almost no shade at the ruins; bring a hat, sunscreen and water, especially from May to September.
- Shoes: you walk on stone and dirt paths, so trainers are best.
- Travelling on: the 7-day tour from Fes visits Meknes and Volubilis on day one and spends the night in Chefchaouen.
