This Chefchaouen day trip from Fes crosses the Rif Mountains to Morocco’s blue city: a medina of blue-washed walls on the mountainside, with Outa el-Hammam Square, the kasbah and the Great Mosque in the middle.

It’s a private tour: the vehicle and driver are just for your group. It’s a long day, with almost 4 hours’ drive each way, and travelling privately you decide how long to spend in Chefchaouen.

  • Chefchaouen’s blue medina and its lanes
  • Outa el-Hammam Square and the Great Mosque

What the day looks like

Early pick-up in Fes. The road heads north through farmland and hills, then into the Rif to Chefchaouen. You have several hours to explore the medina: Outa el-Hammam Square, the kasbah and the Great Mosque, the blue lanes and the craft workshops.

If you still have the energy, you can walk up to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint, which looks out over the whole town. Back to Fes in the afternoon.

Is Chefchaouen a day trip, or worth an overnight stay?

In one day you see the highlights, but you spend almost 8 hours in the car there and back. If you can, stay the night: the medina is at its best in the early evening and first thing in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive. The 7-day tour from Fes and the 5-day tour from Tangier to Casablanca both sleep in Chefchaouen. More ideas in our Chefchaouen guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Fes to Chefchaouen?

Almost 4 hours each way, depending on traffic and stops. That’s why it’s a full-day trip.

Can I have a local guide in Chefchaouen?

Yes: the day trip comes with a local guide. Your driver takes you there and back and, as the trip is private, you explore the medina at your own pace.

Why is Chefchaouen blue?

There are several explanations and none is official: some link it to the Jewish community that once lived in the town, others to keeping mosquitoes away or the houses cool. We go into it in our Chefchaouen guide.

Is the day trip private or shared?

Private. The vehicle, a 4x4 or a van with air conditioning, and the driver are just for your group: you don’t share the day with other travellers. Your driver speaks English, Spanish, French or Italian.
